karta sieciowa nie działa

Więc tak już przy instalacji debiana stable, na dość starym kompie, nie została udało się ustawić sieci.
Zainstalowano system bazowy.

w interfaces wpisy są ok, pingi nie chodzą


jak załadowałem modprobe tulip to niby nie pokazało błędów, ale jak robie ifconfig eth0 down, a potem up to: eth0: h/w init failure err: -16 SIOCSIFFLAGF: Device or resource busy.

Koś coś poradzi ? dodam że karta sieciowa jest sprawna bo na dystrybucjach typu livecd wszystko śmiga.
